My Journey: From 20 Years with British Gas to Octopus Energy
For around two decades, I was a loyal British Gas customer. Like many others, I stuck with what I knew, assuming all energy companies were much the same. However, when I moved home in 2018, I began to realise other companies could offer more and I switched to Octopus Energy.
Yes, all these companies provide us with energy for our homes, but some think outside the box and make using energy something we should consider more. How are we treated as customers? What are their values? Will they demand more from us and fight for change not just for our pockets but for the planet? I was just another number in a massive, outdated system. British Gas, a corporate giant, seemed more interested in profits than people.
Then I discovered Octopus Energy, a challenger brand with a bold mission. I soon discovered it wasn’t just another energy company, it was a movement.
Fast forward to 2025, and Octopus has grown into the UK’s largest energy supplier, overtaking British Gas for the first time in history.
In 2024 Octopus Energy gained one new customer every 30 seconds!

Why I Switched to Octopus Energy
In 2018, when I moved home, I finally made the switch. I had never really considered my home energy bill before, but Octopus Energy’s name and ethics stood out to me. At the time, they had only a small selection of tariffs, but one of them allowed customers to donate to charity (Renewable World) while paying their bills. That sealed the deal for me. Even at the outset, Octopus seemed to have both customers and the planet at its heart.
As a mum of three teenage daughters, spending my money with a company that values the planet and constantly innovates while also respecting its staff is hugely important to me.

In a historic shift, Octopus Energy has overtaken British Gas as the UK’s largest energy provider. I cheered when I heard the news as this isn’t just about numbers it’s about values.
- As of January 2025, Octopus Energy holds a 23.7% market share, serving approximately 12.9 million household accounts—320,000 more than British Gas. Meanwhile, British Gas’s market share has dropped to 23.1%. ([Source: Cornwall Insight])
This is the first time British Gas has lost its top position since the UK energy market opened to competition in the 1990s. Octopus Energy’s success isn’t just about growth it’s about winning customer trust and bagging awards on the route.
