Octopus Energy Tariffs (2024): Unlock Savings and a Sustainable Future

If your current supplier isn’t offering competitive deals, high-quality service, or making you feel powerless over your energy, it’s time for a change.

Like many, I was a loyal British Gas customer for over a decade. But I wanted renewable options, better prices, and a company that valued me. I was fed up, feeling I had no control over my energy bills and how my home had impacted the planet.

That’s why I switched to Octopus Energy in 2018. Fast forward 6 years, and it’s still a decision I’ve never regretted. I don’t think I would be as passionate or knowledgeable about saving money on my bills without the help of Octopus.

Octopus Energy has given me the confidence to try new ways to lower my bills and even generate green energy at home. I love their relentless optimism. It shows in everything they do from customer service to innovative ideas to help the planet.

You don’t need to be an eco evangelist to want to use green energy. I admire anyone who tries to make a difference and I understand what drives Octopus. They genuinely care about the environment and their customers. I’ll explain how Octopus tariffs can save you money.

You don’t need any green tech either to get cheaper energy with Octopus but if you want to add some to the mix, Octopus can install solar panels, battery storage and even a heat pump. Plus provide some great smart tariffs to help make the most of them too.

Why Octopus Energy?

  • The UK’s Largest Domestic Electricity Supplier: It’s not just me – countless others are choosing Octopus because they offer transparent, innovative tariffs, putting your needs and the planet first. Octopus has customers who do not just like them, they love them and even buy Octopus merchandise to show it.
  • Award Winning Service: Octopus was the Which? Recommended Energy Supplier in 2024 (7th year in a row). Octopus truly puts you first – a refreshing change from the traditional energy giants where you feel no empathy as a customer struggling to make ends meet. I like good customer service but love seeing good customer service where a company truly cares about the end users and Octopus do. (Which other energy company would send flowers after a bereavement or family crisis?)

Whether you want to go green or save money, Octopus Energy has a tariff that could be perfect for you. Everyone’s energy needs are different, and that’s why choosing a tariff that’s right for you can help. Let’s dive into what makes Octopus different, I promise it’s worth it.

Understanding Octopus Energy Tariffs

If you are worried about choosing the wrong energy tariff, please don’t. With Octopus Energy, that stress is a thing of the past. One of the best things about Octopus Energy is the flexibility of its tariffs. You can switch tariffs from your Octopus dashboard or email, call or send a Direct Message if you find a better deal or a tariff that suits you better. I have always found Octopus easy to deal with and have switched between tariffs several times. I’ll explain how this can be done.

Here’s what you need to know:

No Exit Fees

The power is in your hands – if a new Octopus deal or other supplier looks good, make the switch without hesitation! If your circumstances change your Octopus tariff can too.

New & Existing Customers

Their best tariffs aren’t just reserved for new customers. Everybody always gets a fair deal and Octopus tariffs are continuing to evolve. With some tariffs, you can even get paid to use energy.

Finding Your Fit

Whether you crave stability with a Fixed Tariff or want sustainability with the Smart Green Tariff, Octopus has options for every lifestyle. If you own any green technology or aspire to it, you’ll love Octopus’ innovation. It’s transformed the way I think about energy. You can’t avoid using energy but if you can be flexible Octopus can be too and their tariffs will save you money.

Fast Switching Guarantee

Octopus aims for a hassle-free 5-day switch. If they fall short, you’ll get £30 compensation!

You can’t underestimate the power of just being nice.

As someone who values clarity and flexibility, Octopus Energy has been a breath of fresh air. Their commitment to making energy smarter and greener is something I didn’t even know I was looking for. In the last six years they’ve come a long way and so have I thanks to their helpful advice.

They have a very relaxed, fun and easy-going style of communicating which I have never felt intimidated by. I think that’s how they drew me in. Now they even offer free coffee and sometimes cake at Greggs which can’t be sniffed. You’ll get to experience Octopus rewards once you have signed up, it’s called Octoplus.

About the author:  I’ve Been a Happy Octopus Energy Customer for 6 Years.

I’m Sarah, and as a mum of 3 daughters, I want to save money and do right by the planet. This led me down a rabbit hole of researching tariffs, smart meters, and renewable options.

You can find me on X and TikTok where I connect with around 7,000 followers looking for practical ways to electrify their homes and reduce energy bills.

Feel free to follow me Sarah_Go_Green and join the conversation – I’d love to hear from you!

I’m also featured on the Octopus website and their YouTube channel as a solar customer. I’ve been on BBC News, Radio Wales, published in the Telegraph for owning part of a wind turbine and had a feature in Bloomberg.

I genuinely want to help you understand your options and make smarter energy choices. It’s that simple, I have become very geeky about my home energy and I can help you too.

I’ve done a quick voice note below to say hello. (3 minutes long.) We can then explore each tariff in detail.

Octopus Energy Tariffs are available to new customers in 2024?

As a new Octopus customer, switching from your existing energy supplier, you choose either;

  • Octopus Flexible Tariff
  • Octopus 12 Months Fixed Tariff.

Using the Octopus Flexible tariff as the base price for your comparison will help you to decide if to fix your energy tariff, stay on the Octopus flexible rate or try to beat both tariffs by changing the way you use energy using a smart meter. All Octopus customers receive a 4% discount on their standing charge.

Once your switch to Octopus Energy is complete you can move to a smart tariff if you have a smart meter or stay on your original Octopus tariff.

I have to emphasise that you do not need a smart meter to switch to Octopus Energy but if you have one or are thinking of having a smart metre installed Octopus has several innovative tariffs to choose from.

octopus energy tariffsMost Octopus Energy customers remain on the Octopus Flexible or Octopus 12-month fixed tariff.  However, I highly recommend reading about the Octopus smart tariffs available especially if you have an EV, solar panels, battery storage or a heat pump.

This article in Bloomberg “We are energy nerds” may give some inspiration if you like green tech. (I’m featured in the article as an energy nerd.)  I have to stress you do not need to be geeky about your energy to switch to Octopus but if you’d like help finding the best Octopus tariff I am more than happy to help.

How to switch to Octopus Energy in 2024? The first step is to get an online quote and choose an Octopus Energy tariff.

Step 1: The easiest way to get a quote to switch to Octopus Energy is via their website. They will tell you how much you will need to pay per month and will show you the tariff rates for both the Octopus fixed and Octopus flexible tariffs.

You will need to answer 4 questions and 3 are multiple choice so it’s quick and easy to get your online quote.

Step 2: If you are happy with your Octopus quote complete the questions which will take you through the signup procedure. This will take less than 5 minutes and your switch should be completed in around 5 working days.

Here is an example of an Octopus Energy dual fuel tariff quote from 15th June 2024.

These tariffs are what I would call traditional energy tariffs.  You do not need a smart meter for either of these tariffs and they are the only 2 tariffs available when you first switch to Octopus Energy. Once your switch is complete you can request to move a smart tariff.

Octopus quote is based on approximate usage for a medium household using a combination of gas and electricity for their home energy need;

3 bedroom home.

3-5 occupants.

2,700 kWh of electricity.

11,500 kWh of gas.

Click “Tariff info” to see the rates available to you and the daily standing charge. (Don’t forget to use my Octopus referral link when you sign up to get £50 credit. I’ll also get £50 credit, so thank you so much if you do use the link.)

Your monthly direct debit payment will vary depending on your usage and geographical location region.

In summary, don’t be offput by the wide choice of Octopus Energy Tariffs.

Everyone consumes energy but household energy usage can vary from one home to another.  Unlike other suppliers, as well as traditional tariffs, Octopus has additional smart tariffs that you can consider IF they are right for you. Don’t let the choice put you off, it’s a good thing, honest.

When you first switch to Octopus you are offered two traditional Octopus tariffs. Once your switch is complete and Octopus can see they are receiving regular updates from your smart meter you can switch to an Octopus smart tariff.  This I believe is the only reason they are not offered at the time of switching.

Is the Octopus Flexible tariff the cheapest Octopus tariff?

No, due to some price fluctuations in June, the Octopus 12-month fixed tariff is around 4% cheaper than the Octopus Flexible tariff.

You could save even more money if you wanted to try an Octopus smart tariff but a dual fuel fixed rate 4% below the current Energy Price Cap is worth considering if you need the predictability of a fixed tariff.

Wholesale energy prices were decreasing so Ogem set the July Energy Price Cap at 7%  below the current April Energy Price Cap. In light of this, your instinct may be to remain on the Octopus Flexible rate, which follows the Energy Price Cap,  however, future predictions warn that you could pay less than the Octopus Flexible rate if you opted for an Octopus 12-month fixed deal.

Prices were predicted to continue to fall throughout early summer of 2024 but because of the conflict in the Middle East wholesale prices rose again in May. If you can lock in an Octopus fixed rate you pay less than the current April 2024 Energy Price Cap and get some peace of mind going into the winter.

The Energy Price Cap is predicted to rise by 12% on the 1st of October 2024 compared to the July 2024 Energy Price Cap!

These are all just predictions but as the Octopus 12-month fixed rate has no exit fees there’s reassurance in securing a 12-month fixed rate. It will lock in your rate while being adaptable if predictions are wrong and the rates go down. It’s a win-win.

Should I fix my Octopus Energy tariff now or wait to see if prices fall further?

If it’s a choice between the Octopus Flexible tariff and the Octopus 12-month fixed tariff it makes sense to take the Octopus fixed rate. There are no exit fees and wholesale energy prices are rising.

The Energy Price Cap will fall on the 1st of July 2024 BUT Octopus Fixed rates are based on wholesale energy prices NOW.  The predicted drop for the flexible rates is based on the past 3 months when prices have been falling. However, wholesale prices have started to rise again.

If you are concerned about winter energy bills and prefer stability, the Octopus 12-month Fixed Tariff can offer the following points worth considering;

  • Under the Energy Price Cap, the Octopus Flexible unit rate will go down by 7% on the 1st of July 2024.
  • However, predictions are that the October Energy Price Cap will rise by 12% on 1st October 2024.
  • Fixing now is not a gamble as customers can change their tariff without facing exit fees.
  • For some, fixing their price for 12 months at a price they know won’t go up any further and not taking the risk of increased wholesale prices may give reassurance.

The Octopus Fixed Tariff isn’t based on the Energy Price Cap which uses past prices over the last 3 months it’s based on wholesale prices now.

If you are waiting for the Energy Price Cap to fall in July before fixing that might not be the best idea but only you can decide what you feel happy with.

The Octopus 12-month fixed tariff is now roughly 3% below the Energy Price Cap.

Martin Lewis suggests fixing if you can find a deal 2% above the current Energy Price Cap.

The Octopus 12 months Fixed June version 3 tariff is 3% below the Energy Price Cap for dual fuel customers.

In my view, the Octopus 12-month fixed beats other fixed rates as there are no exit fees and no requirement for a smart meter. Plus they offer great customer service, winning lots of awards in 2024.

I guess that fixed rates will not keep dropping any further before the summer but who knows? Competition may force fixed deals down which is good for customers or the general election may focus the winning government’s attention on it.

As we head closer to the winter months prices may go up again, no one knows. It’s all just a hunch but with no exit fees, there is no risk.

I find the predicted Energy Price Cap rise on the 1st of October worrying.

These figures are based on South Wales. Prices will vary depending on your geographical location.

I haven’t included the standing charge as these vary throughout the country. In the illustration above they are all the same except for the standing charge on the gas tracker which is slightly less.

It’s a personal choice if you prefer to fix your Octopus Tariff now.

If I wanted the reassurance of a fixed deal for the winter I would fix my Octopus tariff now. I didn’t expect to be saying this but wholesale prices have increased slightly again and it’s a sensible idea to take an Octopus fixed tariff.   There are no exit fees and even though the Energy Price Cap will drop on the 1st of July, the new Energy Price Cap predictions for the 1st of October don’t make easy reading!

You use less energy in the summer so fixing now isn’t a gamble. You can lock in a rate on an Octopus Fixed tariff ready for autumn. With no exit fees, you can easily swap if the fixed rate goes down further. You may want to focus on the period when you will use the most energy, the winter.

What Octopus Energy tariffs are available for gas?

For your gas supply with Octopus you only have 3 options;

How many Octopus Energy tariffs are there for electricty?

For your electricty, there are currently 12 Octopus tariffs available. You don’t need to be on the same tariff for your electricty as you are for your gas.

There are 2 Octopus Tariffs for your electricty that do not need a smart meter;

There are 10 Octopus Smart Tariffs for your electricty;

Working out the right Octopus smart tariff to make the most of your green tech can save you a lot of money, cut your C02 and help you on your mission to a more sustainable home. Even though Octopus smart tariffs are fairly new and rather niche over a million Octopus customers have already tried them out.

You can try the Octopus smart quiz to see which tariff may be right for you.

Are there any additional benefits when you have a smart meter?

If you have a smart meter as well as having additional tariffs to choose you have three additional benefits;

  • Octoplus – Octopus rewards.
  • Saving Sessions – earning money for using no energy or exporting energy at peak times during the winter.
  • Power Ups – Get free energy at super green times. (South East England)

What are the Octopus Flexible tariff prices in 2024 before and after 1st July 2024?

This Octopus Flexible tariff is referred to as the standard variable tariff.  It has no fixed contract period.  It provides short-term stability securing your price for 3 months under the Energy Price Cap. The Octopus Flexible tariff is a default tariff that all energy suppliers have.

Ofgem reviews and updates the Energy Price Cap level every three months.  The dates when the Energy Price Cap levels will be announced during the next year are:

  • 1 October to 31 December 2024 level, announced by 27th August 2024
  • 1st January 2024 to 31st March 2025, announced 25th November 2024

The Energy Price Cap will fall by 7% on the 1st of July.

Octopus Energy Flexible rates before and after the 1st of July 2024

This is how much you will pay on the Octopus Flexible Tarif before and after the 1st July 2024 Energy Price cap reduction.

  • Electricity –  24.51p per kWh with a daily standing charge of 61.19p and after the 1st of July 2024 prices will reduce to 23.37p per kWh with a daily standing charge of 61.19p.
  • Gas –  6.25p per kWh with a standing charge of 29.68p per day and after the 1st of July prices will reduce to 5.68p per kWh with a daily standing charge of 29.68p per day.

The prices are based on South Wales and will vary depending on where you live. Regional rates for the July Energy Price Cap are found on the Ofgem website. Octopus will release them over the next few weeks.

Now that you know the Octopus Flexible tariff rates you can decide if you want to take this rate based on the current Energy Price Cap, opt for an Octopus Fixed rate or move to a smart tariff to try and beat it. (The smart tariffs require a smart meter and may involve an element of risk compared to the traditional tariffs.)

Octopus Energy 12-month fixed rate v the Octopus Flexible tariff 2024?

Below I have compared the existing Octopus 12-month fixed tariff with predicted Energy Price Cap prices for 2024. The Octopus 12-month fixed tariff is cheaper than all the predictions for electricty rates under the Energy Price Cap throughout 2024!

The Octopus 12-month fixed provides security and stability for those who prefer peace of mind.  Surprisingly this won’t cost you more. You can reduce your energy costs now rather than waiting for the Energy Price Cap to go down on 1st July and lock in rates with zero early exit fees.

If you are undecided about fixing your Octopus tariff the comparison below might help. The energy prices are based on predictions by Cornwall Insight  (Martyn Lewis refers to these as well) from the 17th of May 2024, Ofgem and Octopus Energy’s current tariff prices.

Also updated predictions by Cornwall Insight on 24th May 2024.

Are Octopus Prices Rising in 2024?

So far Octopus Energy prices have gone down throughout 2024 but predictions are that in the winter prices will increase. When I refer to prices going up or down I am referring to the Octopus Flexible tariff which follows the Energy Price Cap.

I am not a fan of typical usage figures but as you can see the Octopus Flexible Tariff has reduced over the last year. But prices are still high compared to 2021.

Loyal Octopus 12 months fixed Tariff.

The Loyal Octopus 12-month fixed tariff was open to existing Octopus Energy customers who had been with Octopus for 8 months. It was 4% below the Energy Price Cap. This tariff has been withdrawn and replaced with a fixed tariff available to new and existing customers.  This is 3% below the Energy Price Cap for a dual fuel tariff.

I am all for being rewarded for loyalty but the Loyal Octopus 12 months fixed tariff has now been overtaken by the Octopus 12 months fixed June 2024 v3 tariff. It provides a cheaper rate for everyone which is great.

You can see the Loyal Octopus rates in the historical tariffs section of the Octopus website. Enter your postcode and filter for domestic and historical tariffs. The tariff is still being displayed as available on many websites such as Money Saving Expert but it was withdrawn in April.

What’s Economy 7?

If you want to vary either the Octopus Flexible tariff or the Octopus 12-month fixed tariff to include off-peak rates at night, called Economy 7 you can do that too. You will pay more for the daytime rate BUT you can hustle by shifting a proportion of your energy to off-peak use, such as washing machines and dishwashers. You can click here to download the Economy 7 on the Octopus Flexible rate here. (These are the prices if you pay by direct debit.)

There is a variety of tariffs beyond the Octopus traditional tariff but to start your switch to Octopus Energy you just need to choose between the Octopus Flexible Tariff and the Octopus 12-month fixed tariff.

All traditional and smart tariffs are available to new customers. Yes, you can switch to Octopus Energy using the link above. For any smart / tracker tariffs, you will have to sign up for the Octopus Flexible tariff or the Octopus 12-month fixed tariff first.  Then when the switch is complete ask to be moved to the smart or tracker tariff. It can sometimes take a little time as Octopus needs to make sure they are receiving readings from your smart meter.

Please read my full review of any smart tariffs you are interested in switching to as there is an eligibility criterion.

Energy Price Cap Predictions 2024 will they change?

July Energy Price 2024

Cornwall Insight changed the most recent predictions. They are now also forecasting a slightly bigger increase in October and this may go up yet again. However,  anything could happen in the next few months.

The figures are based on the latest Cornwall Insight Predictions from 24th May 2024.

Predictions on energy prices are constantly changing and are a best guess.

There is a lot of volatility in the world and prices are still fluctuating.

Cornwall Insight looks at the political landscapes and makes its predictions depending on what’s happening in the world. These predictions will change again, as situations escalate or diminish and new pressures evolve around the world. The wholesale energy market responds to the world’s delicate political landscape. We see this impact on our energy bills. So you have to take any predictions with a pinch of salt.

Can I switch Octopus tariffs if I find a better deal?

Yes, you can swap Octopus Energy tariffs very easily there are no exit fees on any of their tariffs.

Are there any exit fees on Octopus Energy tariffs?

There are no exit fees on any of the Octopus Energy tariffs. You can switch tariffs at any time except;

  • Tracker tariff – No exit fee but you may have to wait 2 weeks to switch to another tariff. You also can’t go back onto this tariff for 9 months. (To stop people gaming the system)
  • Agile tariff – No exit fee, you can switch tariffs straight away but you can’t go back onto the tariff for 30 days. (To stop people gaming the system)

I have switched energy tariffs several times with Octopus and it is straightforward to do, you simply email or DM them on Twitter plus you can call them too.

What does Martin Lewis say about fixing your energy deal?

If you prefer the security of a fixed rate Martin Lewis suggests a fixed rate may be a good option if it’s less than 2% more than the April Energy Price Cap. The Octopus 12-month fixed is roughly 3% below the April Energy Price Cap.  Plus there are no exit fees or penalties and is open to new customers.

Martin Lewis has posted a podcast that is well worth listening to if you are considering fixing your tariff now.

What can I do to lower my Octopus Energy bill?

Apart from using less energy if you use energy, you’ll get charged the set energy rate. Choosing an Octopus Economy 7 tariff means you can shift your energy use as much as you can to the 0ff-peak window and lower the average price you pay per kWh on your monthly bill.

If you have a smart meter you will have more options, for example, on Octopus Agile you could get paid to use energy!

Have Octopus Energy’s standing charges gone up?

Yes, in 2024 Octopus Energy has increased its standing charges but they are still 4% below the rate set by Ofgem.

Standing charges are unfair. No matter how hard you try you can’t lower your standing charge. I live in South Wales which has a lower population density and just like Scotland, Wales and northern England we get hit with higher daily standing charges.

I appreciate the Octopus 4% reduction on the standing charge but I wish there was a way for people with lower energy use to reduce it further.

Maybe we will hear something from Ofgem on this subject when they review the Energy Price Cap over the next few months but for the standing charge going in July will remain almost unchanged.

Summary of Octopus Smart tariffs.

If you can pair the right Octopus smart tariff to your home setup you can save a lot of money whilst helping the National Grid become greener. It’s a smart and straightforward way to reduce your energy bills. So what’s the cheapest Octopus Energy tariff?

Before choosing an Octopus smart tariff you should consider your;

  • Aversion to risk.
  • Ability to be flexible in your home energy use.
  • The green tech you have in your home. (You don’t need any for two of the tariffs.)
  • The time of year. (Some tariffs perform better in the summer or winter.)

Octopus Energy Tracker.

The Octopus Tracker tariff is the simplest way to experience an Octopus smart tariff.  You’ll almost certainly save money at the moment compared to the Energy Price Cap.

3 Reasons I always recommend the Octopus Tracker tariff.

  1. The Octopus Tracker tariff requires no green tech and no clock-watching.
  2. There is just one flat rate which changes at midnight and is linked to the previous days’ wholesale energy prices. There is no time lag with the tracker tariff.
  3. If you want to beat the Energy Price Cap and benefit from drops in energy prices first then it’s an easy way to lower your bill.

You can be on Octopus Tracker tariff for gas, electricty or both. Octopus Energy allows you to split your fuel types between different Octopus tariffs.

  • Ideal for: Anyone. You don’t need any green tech and it’s the only smart tariff that can be used for gas and electricty. (You don’t need to have both energy types on the same tariff.) If you are prepared to ride with the wave of wholesale energy prices in real-time to save money this flat rate which changes every day at midnight is for you.
  • Would I recommend this tariff: Yes, this is an easy entry into Octopus smart tariffs for anyone who wants to try and reduce their energy bill right now.
  • Advantages: The Octopus Tracker tariff isn’t linked to the Energy Price Cap. With the Octopus Tracker tariff if wholesale energy prices fall you make the saving immediately. On the flip side if wholesale energy prices go up you feel the pinch first too.
  • Disadvantages: This isn’t a set a set and forget tariff. You have to keep an eye on the prices at least weekly to ensure it’s still a valid way of saving money compared to the Energy Price Cap.

Octopus Energy Tracker tariff for today (14th June 2024) and gas tracker rates for the last week.

On the Octopus Tracker today tariff, you will pay 4.99p kWh for gas and 19.45p per kWh for electricity today.

The price is based on the South Wales region and may vary depending on location.

If you opt for the Octopus Tracker tariff your daily rates will change but the formula and the standing charges are set for the 12 months your terms are fixed.

It is worth checking out the Octopus Tracker tariff as the price per kWh has been 30% cheaper than the Energy Price Cap on average over the last few months. So the savings on your energy bill could be quite considerable.

Octopus Energy Agile tariff

The Octopus Agile tariff isn’t just a smart tariff it’s clever. It is a variable tariff where the rates you pay for electricty change half-hourly based on wholesale energy prices. If the winds blow and there’s excess energy on the grid you could get paid to use it. If there is high demand the rate goes up. You’ll use cleaner, greener energy and save money.

  • Ideal for: Anyone. You don’t need any green tech. If you can shift some of your energy use to the cheaper half-hourly slots you should save money on your energy bill. You’ll have to be flexible with your energy use. Eagle eye bargain-saving customers will love this tariff.
  • Would I recommend this tariff? Yes, Octopus Agile requires no green tech. If you have battery storage you can reduce your energy bill, if you don’t you can too!
  • Have I been on this tariff? No, I jumped in feet first with an EV tariff to Octopus Go but so far I haven’t opted for Octopus Agile but I considered it for the summer as my import tariff. According to third-party apps, I could have saved money this year on Octopus Agile but I prefer the simplicity of Intelligent Octopus Go.
  • Advantages: You aren’t stuck on the Energy Price Cap. If it’s windy and there’s excess energy you can get cheap or even free energy. Several times this year Octopus customers have been paid to use energy. If you can be flexible with your energy use with no green tech you can drastically reduce your average price per kWh.
  • Disadvantages: It is not a set-and-forget tariff you have to actively manage your energy use. Unless you have Home Assistant or a third-party software that can help automate it.

Top pick of Octopus Energy EV tariffs in 2024.🌟

Intelligent Octopus Go is my top pick for 2024. Intelligent Octopus Go rates are cheaper, 7.5p instead of 9.5p on Octopus Go. The off-peak rate spans a minimum of six hours versus four on Go.

Octopus Energy Go.

If you own an Electric Vehicle and can charge it at home you should consider a dedicated EV tariff.  On the Octopus Go tariff, you can get an off-peak rate well below any Economy 7 or domestic energy tariff.

  • Ideal for: Anyone with an Electric Vehicle who can charge at home at night.
  • Would I recommend this tariff?: Yes, I would recommend this tariff if you don’t qualify for the intelligent version of this tariff. Octopus Go provides 4 hours of off-peak charging between 00.30 and 04.30 at 9p per kWh. This should be enough time to top up your EV each night on a cheap tariff.
  • Have I been on this tariff myself?: Yes, before the launch of Intelligent Octopus Go I was on Octopus Go.
  • Advantages: Octopus Go is simple to use. All you need to do is set your timer once on your EV or EV charger and plug it in each night. The whole house gets to use the off-peak including your home battery if you have one. This will help reduce your overall energy bill.
  • Disadvantages: If you regularly need to charge from low battery to fully charged the four hours may not be enough. If you have solar panels Octopus Go customers are limited to Octopus Outgoing Lite which is limited to 8p per kWh for your export.

Intelligent Octopus Go.

If you have an eligible EV or EV charger Intelligent Octopus Go wins hands down. You’d only opt for Octopus Go if you are not eligible for Intelligent Octopus Go. It provides a way of charging your EV at home at a time that is greenest for the grid.

  • Ideal for: Anyone with a compatible EV or EV charger who can charge at home at night.
  • Would I recommend this tariff?: Yes, Intelligent Octopus Go is the cheapest EV-dedicated tariff Octopus has. It’s 7.5p per kWh for a minimum of 6 hours a night between 11.30 pm and 5.30 am. Enough to add a large charge to your EV each night.
  • Have I been on this tariff myself? Yes, for 2 years. It is my current tariff. I charge my EV and home battery at night for 7.5p per kWh.
  • Advantages: Intelligent Octopus Go is simple to use. In the Octopus app you set the level of charge you want and buy when and Octopus does the rest. Need more than 6 hours of EV charging? Octopus will allocate additional off-peak slots.  If you arrive home empty and need it fully charged for the next morning that will be done all at the 7.5p per kWh rate. The whole house gets the off-peak too including your home battery if you have one.  There is no restriction on your export tariff.  I export on Outgoing fixed at 15p per kWh.
  • Disadvantages: You need a compatible EV or EV charger.  Completing the test charge can be fiddly to get onto the tariff but usually doesn’t take long. There are occasional glitches as it’s a beta tariff.

Octopus Flux Tariff.

Octopus Flux customers are rewarded for exporting electricity at peak times and importing electricity off-peak. It is a dual-band tariff with one standing charge.

  • Ideal for: Anyone with solar panels or solar panels combined with battery storage.
  • Would I recommend this tariff? Yes, but only if you export over 40% more than you import.
  • Have I been on this tariff? No, I had my solar and battery installation in October 2023. Over winter this isn’t the tariff to be on. I did consider it for the summer but Octopus has lowered the export rate and increased the import rate since 1st April. I am happy with my current tariff.
  • Advantages: There is a much higher export rate on Octopus Flux. Time your export to the peak period you’ll make more money than on a standard outgoing tariff. If you have either a large solar array or a large home battery plus your import is low then you can maximise your solar export income during the spring and summer months.
  • Disadvantages:  If you import more than you export this isn’t the best Octopus tariff as the import rate is quite high compared to other smart tariffs. It requires a slightly more hands-on approach compared to the Intelligent version of the tariff. (Unless you are using Home Assistant)

You can see the rates in my full review of the Octopus Flux tariff.

Octopus Flux

Intelligent Octopus Flux.

Intelligent Octopus Flux is a combined import and export tariff. It’s for customers with a compatible home battery and solar panels. The rates of your import and export match on Octopus Flux.

  • Ideal for: Anyone with a GivEnergy battery and solar panels.
  • Would I recommend the tariff? Yes, but it would have been a firmer yes last summer before the April 2024 price changes. Now, you have to do a little more calculation to make sure it is the best tariff for you. If you want to be completely hands-off and you don’t have an EV that qualifies for an EV tariff this is a plug-and-play tariff which is ideal for the spring and summer.
  • Have I been on this tariff? No, I have a GivEnergy battery but I also have an EV. I prefer the ease of the tariff I am on which has a lower import rate combined with a flat export rate. which doesn’t change throughout the day. That’s just my personal preference.
  • Advantages: Octopus automates everything. The import and export rates are the same. It’s a one-in and one-out tariff which could result in a zero energy bill. However, if you export more than you import at peak times you’ll start to make a credit on your energy bill. During the summer you should easily be able to do and it is all automated.
  • Disadvantages: The import rate is quite high. You hand over the control of your home battery to Octopus. This could be seen as an advantage or disadvantage. It is, however, easy to switch this control off. I believe it’s the same as on Intelligent Octopus Go. I  turn off the smart controlling of my EV in the Octopus app.

Cosy Octopus Tariff.

Cosy Octopus is an Octopus Energy tariff designed for heat pump owners. It is a variable time-of-use tariff with two price dips during the day. The dips are known as “boost periods” from 04:00 – 07:00 and 13:00 – 14:00. There is also a “peak period” from 16:00 – 19:00. Outside these times there is another price per kWh. So in total, there are 3 pricing periods, along with a standing charge.

  • Ideal for: Anyone with a heat pump.
  • Would I recommend the tariff? Yes, if you have a heat pump it looks like a good option for the winter.
  • Have I been on this tariff? No, I don’t own a heat pump yet.
  • Advantages: The boost periods will help all-electric homes who rely on electricity to heat their homes. You can boost during a cheap period and then coast during a peak period.
  • Disadvantages?: As I don’t have a heat pump I am not sure. I think if you threw in an EV and home battery you’d have to stop and do some maths. A third-party compare app would be helpful to make sure you are on the best tariff during the winter.

If you want to get a quote you can find the rates for your area on the Octopus website. Just scroll down and enter your postcode. You may be asked to show proof of heat pump ownership to go on this tariff.

Octopus Outgoing Tariffs

If you have green tech Octopus are leading the way with the smart and export tariffs. I have 16 solar panels. A 13.5 kWh battery and an EV. I have spent as many hours pondering tariffs as I have looking at my solar generation in the GivEnergy App.
