Is It Worth Switching to Octopus Energy in 2025? My Honest Review & Savings

My Journey: From 20 Years with British Gas to Octopus Energy

For around two decades, I was a loyal British Gas customer. Like many others, I stuck with what I knew, assuming all energy companies were much the same. However, when I moved home in 2018, I began to realise other companies could offer more and I switched to Octopus Energy.

Yes, all these companies provide us with energy for our homes, but some think outside the box and make using energy something we should consider more. How are we treated as customers? What are their values? Will they demand more from us and fight for change not just for our pockets but for the planet? I was just another number in a massive, outdated system. British Gas, a corporate giant, seemed more interested in profits than people.

Then I discovered Octopus Energy, a challenger brand with a bold mission. I soon discovered it wasn’t just another energy company, it was a movement.

Why I Switched to Octopus Energy

In 2018, when I moved home, I finally made the switch. I had never really considered my home energy bill before, but Octopus Energy’s name and ethics stood out to me. At the time, they had only a small selection of tariffs, but one of them allowed customers to donate to charity (Renewable World) while paying their bills. That sealed the deal for me. Even at the outset, Octopus seemed to have both customers and the planet at its heart.

As a mum of three teenage daughters, spending my money with a company that values the planet and constantly innovates while also respecting its staff is hugely important to me.

The Best Employer in 2025 – Why That Matters to Consumers

Octopus Energy doesn’t just talk about ethics, it lives by them. In 2025, they won awards for being the best employer in the UK, and as customers, this should matter to us. A company that treats its staff well is far more likely to treat its customers well too.

Happy staff means happy customers – Greg Jackson, CEO Octopus Energy.

Octopus Energy’s Customer-Centric Approach

Fast forward a few years, and during the energy crisis, Octopus Energy was constantly putting out information to keep customers informed.

  • During COVID, they ran virtual quiz nights for their members, bringing people together in a way no other energy company did.
  • Even before energy prices hit their peak, they lobbied for change, calling out an outdated and broken energy market.

I was also fortunate to visit their depot in Slough, where they train heat pumps and solar engineers. Walking into that space felt like stepping into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for energy innovation and everyone seemed excited and motivated to work there.

No wonder they have won the Which? Best Energy Supplier for the 8th year in a row in 2025! Considering they’ve only been going for 9 years that’s quite a record!

British Gas vs Octopus: A Clear Winner in 2025?

Octopus Energy’s Rise – The Fall of British Gas

In a historic shift, Octopus Energy has overtaken British Gas as the UK’s largest energy provider. I cheered when I heard the news as this isn’t just about numbers it’s about values.

  • As of January 2025, Octopus Energy holds a 23.7% market share, serving approximately 12.9 million household accounts—320,000 more than British Gas. Meanwhile, British Gas’s market share has dropped to 23.1%. ([Source: Cornwall Insight])

This is the first time British Gas has lost its top position since the UK energy market opened to competition in the 1990s. Octopus Energy’s success isn’t just about growth it’s about winning customer trust and bagging awards on the route. Like playing a computer game Octopus grabs all those bonus points as the music does a triumphant tune!

Octopus Energy v British Gas

British Gas vs Octopus: Customer Satisfaction

According to the latest Which? survey in 2025, Octopus Energy ranks among the top energy providers for customer satisfaction, while British Gas was one of the lowest-ranked suppliers in 2025.

So why do so many people still stick with British Gas, despite their lower customer ratings? Is it brand loyalty? Fear of switching?

The good news is that switching energy suppliers has never been easier. Octopus Energy makes it seamless, handling the entire process for you. Plus, they currently have no exit fees, so if you’re not happy or find a better deal later, you’re free to switch again.

Greg Jackson: The CEO Who Fights for Change

Greg Jackson isn’t your typical energy boss. He doesn’t treat customers as ignorant or expect them to just accept whatever they’re given. Instead, he wants to bring people along on the journey with him helping them understand energy and most importantly, lower their bills whilst helping the planet too.

When traditional companies resisted change, Greg built a company that embraced it.

How Octopus is Challenging the Energy Market & What It Means for You

One of the biggest reasons I admire Octopus is how they are pushing for real change in the energy market. Greg Jackson has been calling out how outdated and unfair the system is, especially when it comes to pricing and renewable energy.

Key Changes Octopus is Fighting For:

  • Cheaper electricity where it’s greener – Octopus is fighting for a system where people living near wind farms and solar plants pay less for their energy.
  • Fixing the broken grid connection system – Right now, companies trying to build more renewable energy projects are stuck waiting for years to get connected. Octopus is pushing to speed this up, which would mean more cheap, green energy for all of us, sooner.
  • Zonal pricing to make bills fairer – Instead of one-size-fits-all pricing, they want a system that better reflects where energy is available, helping cut costs where renewables are abundant.

These changes could mean lower bills and better service for ordinary people like me and you.

Innovation & Technology – How Octopus Stands Out

What Makes Octopus Different:

  • Kraken smart-powered tariffs like Agile Octopus adjust prices in real-time, helping consumers save money when energy demand is low.
  • Smart meters and 100% renewable energy make it easy to track and reduce usage.
  • Award-winning customer service, with quick responses and helpful support, unlike the endless call centre queues of traditional providers.
  • Fair pricing, no exit fees, and a commitment to ethical energy supply.

How to Switch to Octopus Energy & What to Expect

If you’re thinking of making the switch to Octopus Energy, the process is simple and hassle-free. From my own experience, it took just minutes to sign up, and Octopus handled everything. Within weeks, I was enjoying better service, clearer billing, and the peace of mind that I was supporting a company that truly cares about its customers. (The switch process has now been reduced to days with most expected to be completed in just 5 working days!)

Final Thoughts: Should You Make the Switch?

Yes, it is well worth switch switching to Octopus Energy. After around 20 years with British Gas, I never thought changing energy providers could feel so empowering. Personally, this isn’t just about switching companies it’s about joining a movement for fairer, smarter, and greener energy. If you roll your eyes at this sentiment and just what the cheapest energy deal Octopus is likely to do that for you too!  Plus they provide all these opportunities to save more too

Octopus Energy is a fantastic supplier that is most definitely worth switching to. Octopus is likely the cheapest energy supplier for most people in the UK. However, everyone’s energy needs are different so follow along for tips.
