Octopus Energy’s Cosy 6 and Cosy 9: A UK-Made Heat Pump Revolution

I take my hat off to Octopus Energy. When they launched this in April 2022, they had the vision to slash the prices of heat pumps, making them more affordable and attractive for UK consumers. They’ve not only achieved that, but they’ve also secured jobs for many families while proving that the UK can lead the way in the green technology industry.

I grew up in the South Wales Valleys, a mining community where livelihoods depended on the coal industry. We relied on dirty jobs for our communities to survive, even though they brought illness and environmental destruction to our doorstep. That’s why I believe we need companies like Octopus Energy to be bold and innovate not just to create local jobs but to provide a genuinely affordable alternative for those who want to ditch fossil fuels and electrify their homes.

Greg Jackson the CEO of Octopus Energy is described as a disrupter in the energy market and he is showing his colours when it comes to heat pumps! They are now the largest heat pump installer in the UK.

If you want to take a look at the Octopus Cosy 6 a little more closely this video gives an overview of its capability and shows it being assembled on the production line in Northern Ireland. (It’s a very easy-to-understand video and made me want to clap at the end, but I am a geek!)

How much does an Octopus Energy heat pump cost?

An Octopus Energy heat pump costs as little as £500 for a standard installation, thanks to the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant. The total cost of installation is £8,000, with the grant covering 93.75% of the price. This grant is available until 2028. (It’s not based on your income.)

Rough Installation Cost  Price (After Grant)
Standard Home (under 6kW) – Cosy 6 £500 – £1,000
Larger Home (6kW – 9kW) – Cosy 9 £1500– £2,500

Grant Applied: £7,500 from Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
Extra Discount: £100 off with code 95460 (Can be used against any Octopus Heat Pump.)

I have regularly seen quotes of well below £1000 on X. It’s well worth getting a quote from Octopus but just take into account it uses your home’s energy-efficient rating to give a quick quote. It may go up or even down after the survey.

For larger or more complex homes, costs may be higher, but 91% of Octopus Energy heat pump quotes are below the UK national average of £5,565 but I have regularly seen lots of people delighted with the Cosy 6 installed for around the £1000 mark. So it is well worth getting a quote.

Additional costs may apply for extra work such as scaffolding, planning permission, or system upgrades. However, if you need to add some floor boarding say to your loft or a light for a hot water tank that is something you could do as a DIY project to keep costs down. Octopus will explain step-by-step what you’d need to do before the Cosy 6 is installed.

How Many Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps Are Available?

As of February 2025, there are currently two Octopus Cosy heat pump models available for installation in the UK:

  • Octopus Cosy 6
  • Octopus Cosy 9

Octopus has just launched the Cosy 9 in January 2025 and already rumblings are on forums reporting installations in February which is amazing. Not many people have seen the Cosy 9 so this is hot off the press! If you’re looking for an alternative to a gas boiler, this could be a game-changer for bigger households.

Octopus is expected to expand the Cosy Heat Pump series further and I will update this post when information is available.

What’s the Difference Between the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9?

The Octopus Cosy 9 is a slightly bigger model, first installed in January 2025. It shares the same base dimensions as the Cosy 6 but stands slightly taller.

Here’s a quick comparison:

Model Suitable for Heat Loss Capacity
Cosy 6 Homes with 1-4 bedrooms Up to 5.6kW
Cosy 9 Homes with 3-5 bedrooms Up to 8.7kW

Can I switch Cosy Heat Pump models after getting a quote?

Yes, after the home survey, your Octopus Heat Pump adviser can talk you through all your options and give an exact quote for your heat pump installation.

Are all the Cosy Heat Pumps Eligible for Government Grants?

Yes! Both the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 qualify for the government heat pump grant, making them more affordable for homeowners switching to low-carbon heating.

Plus, you can get £100 off using my Octopus heat pump referral link ( referral code: 95460 and just to be transparent, I also get £100, thank you if you use it!). Better yet, this discount can be combined with other promotions offered by Octopus!

A First-Hand Look at Octopus Energy’s Heat Pump Vision

I had the chance to visit Octopus Energy’s Slough warehouse back in 2022. At the time, their heat pump operation was still in its early stages. Octopus had just acquired the manufacturing company that would go on to produce the Cosy Heat Pump series, and I met some of the engineers from Northern Ireland who were at the site.

Speaking to them, their excitement was clear. They told me that as a small company, they were excited about the future for both job security and innovation. With Octopus stepping in and investing, they saw a huge opportunity to scale up and bring affordable, high-quality heat pumps to UK homes.

Fast forward three years and the Cosy heat pumps have now been designed, built, and are being installed across the UK showing Octopus Energy’s vision was spot on. This is a massive win for homeowners looking for efficient and affordable low-carbon heating solutions.

Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps – UK Made for Lower Costs and Future Proof Pricing

Unlike other providers, Octopus Energy designs and builds the Cosy 6 in Northern Ireland. This is great for UK jobs and reduces CO₂ emissions from imports. But it also helps Octopus future-proof pricing.

With the government’s Heat Pump Grant ending in 2028, Octopus is focused on scaling up production to drive costs even lower. Owning their supply chain means they are not just taking advantage of grants today but making heat pumps more affordable in the long run.

What Makes Cosy Heat Pump Different?

By manufacturing the Cosy heat pumps, Octopus cuts out the middleman, which means lower costs and better quality control.

The Pac-Man shape Cosy Heat Pump is compact and rounded, unlike the long, boxy units most people picture. The smaller size makes installation easier and helps keep costs down.

Octopus isn’t just chasing lab efficiency numbers. They focus on real-world savings for customers. Older homes don’t operate under perfect test conditions, so what matters is actual performance, not just theoretical figures.

That’s why Octopus created the Cosy Tariff a special electricity tariff designed to keep running costs low for heat pump users. They don’t just sell you a heat pump they make sure it works affordably in the long run too.

Octopus Handles the Paperwork for Your Heat Pump Application

One of the best things about getting a heat pump with Octopus? They take care of all the paperwork for you in typical Octopus style. It is all easy to understand and follow along with.Octopus apply for your heat pump government grant

Once you’ve signed the final sales agreement, Octopus will send you an email confirming they’ve completed the ENA application and submitted it to your DNO. They’ll also handle the Government BUS grant application and the HEIS warranty application on your behalf.

After everything is processed on their end, they’ll advise you to keep an eye out for an email from Ofgem regarding your grant application. All you need to do is click the link and confirm your eligibility. It’s also worth checking for any messages from your DNO in case they need any further details. You just forward these to Octopus.

Should you need planning permission for your heat pump installation Octopus can help you with this they cannot submit the form on your behalf but your Octopus adviser will talk you through this early on.

Octopus say that; Most heat pumps can be fitted under something called “permitted development” which means that planning permission is not required.

At this point all you have paid is a £200 deposit, the rest is payable upon completion of your Cosy 6 installation. It’s that easy Octopus makes the whole process hassle-free! 💡

Q: Why do I need to pay a deposit before the survey?

  • Octopus Energy requires a deposit as a commitment to show you’re serious about proceeding with the installation.
  • This helps them allocate resources and plan your heat pump installation efficiently.
  • The deposit is fully refundable, so if you decide not to go ahead, you’ll get your money back.

How Much Can You Save with a Heat Pump?

Savings vary, and Octopus is refreshingly honest about that. TJ Root, Director of Flexibility at Octopus, compares it to a car’s MPG rating. Your actual efficiency depends on how you use it, your home setup, and the weather. That’s why having Octopus Energy on hand with advice and a dedicated heat pump tariff makes sense.  They can even remotely monitor your Cosy heat pump and diagnose any issues.

I delve further into the cost saving of the Cosy Heat Pumps towards the end of this blog post.

This is a great overview of the Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps.

Getting the Right Fit Matters with any Heat Pump, including the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9.

If your heat pump is too small, it won’t keep you warm. If it’s too big, you’ll waste energy and money. Think of it like picking the right sized speaker for a room too small and it struggles, too big and it’s overkill.

Heat pumps run at lower temperatures than gas boilers, so some homes need bigger radiators. Octopus takes care of this as part of the installation, making sure your system works efficiently from day one.

Octopus will help you decide which of the Octopus Cosy series best meets your home’s needs.

Carbon Footprint – The Eco-Friendly Choice

A heat pump is 3-4 times more efficient than a gas boiler. For every unit of electricity used, you get three to four units of heat. While electricity costs more per unit than gas, this high efficiency cancels that out, making it cheaper overall.

As more green energy sources enter the grid, running a heat pump gets even cheaper and greener. Unlike many imported models, the Cosy 6 is built in the UK, meaning lower transport emissions and a smaller carbon footprint right from the start.

Cosy 6 v Gas boiler

How Long Does a Heat Pump Last?

With regular maintenance, a heat pump lasts 15 to 25 years which is longer than a gas boiler.

Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9  –  8 Year Warranty & Aftercare.

  • 8-year warranty included  for your heat pump – £0
  • Optional monthly maintenance plan with annual servicing – First-year service is free and then it’s £9 a month directly with Octopus. (Same-day call-out when you contact them by midday.)
  • Dedicated support team for quick issue resolution – open 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm on weekends.

If something goes wrong, you’re not dealing with a third-party company everything is handled by Octopus directly.

You can read more about Octopus warranty and aftercare here.

Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 Smart Features & Future-Proof Design

The Cosy 6 is built to last and designed for modern homes:

  • Uses eco-friendly R290 refrigerant
  • Works in temperatures as low as -25°C
  • Includes smart controls for easy remote management

This is what excites me the over-the-air software updates which means your heat pump improves over time, just like a smartphone.

🚀♻️🚨 Potential Downsides of the Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 🚨

Learning Curve – Some users find heat pumps different from gas boilers.
Space for the Hot Water Tank – If upgrading from a combi boiler, you’ll need a storage tank which will require more upheaval to install.
Electricity Prices Can Vary – Tariffs change, so it’s worth reviewing your energy deal yearly.

Octopus Cosy Heat Pump Hub and Pods: The Smartest Way to Control Your Heat Pump.

Derya engineer who created the Cosy 6 Hub

The Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 Hub and Pods are a next-gen smart heating control system, designed to work seamlessly with Octopus Energy’s smart tariffs and energy-saving features.

If you’ve used Hive, Tado, or Nest for central heating, you know how convenient smart thermostats are. Until recently, heat pumps lacked a similar option until the Octopus Cosy 6 changed that.

I genuinely think the Cosy 6 Hub and Pods are miles ahead of the competition for heat pump controls. I’ve even met Derya, one of the Octopus engineers behind it, at an Octopus event. She’s an absolute genius in smart home tech (and also the brains behind the Octopus Home Mini!).

How does the Octopus Cosy Heat Pump Hub work?

The Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 Hub is the brain of your Octopus Cosy 6 heating system, designed to optimise and automate your heat pump for maximum efficiency. By intelligently adjusting your heating, it helps lower your energy bills while keeping your home warm and comfortable.

This smart control unit is wired into your power supply and connects to your home WiFi, allowing seamless communication between your Cosy 6 heat pump, heating pods, and the Octopus Energy app. With real-time data and automation, the Cosy 6 Hub ensures your heating runs at its best so you can enjoy a cosy, energy-efficient home without the hassle.

You can adjust your heating and hot water remotely via the app or manually using the buttons on the unit.

  • The Boost button lets you temporarily override schedules to heat your home.
  • The Hot Water Boost heats your water up to 50°C for 2 hours—it’s more efficient than using your immersion heater.
  • You can use both Cosy 6 and the immersion at the same time if you need hot water quickly, but I recommend keeping the immersion off unless necessary as it’s around double the price to run!

Cosy 6 Review – Eleri: It’s very straightforward to use. Adjusting the temperature is simple, and it doesn’t require much effort. It’s great knowing that it’s just doing its job without constant attention.

Cosy Heat Pump Pods: What Do They Do?

Octopus Cosy Pods
Octopus Cosy Pod

The Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 Pods replace your old thermostat and feed temperature and humidity data back to the Hub. Octopus usually installs four pods around your home, and you can choose where they go.

Each pod can be set to do one of two manual functions:

  1. Boost heating in that zone
  2. Boost hot water

Your Octopus installer sets this up, so make sure you tell them which function you’d prefer for each pod! For example, having a hot water boost button in the kitchen could be handy.

Right now, there’s no digital display on the Hub or Pods so you’ll need to check the app to see the temperature. Personally, I’d love to see Alexa integration in future (like Tado has), so you could ask it for room temperatures or use voice commands to boost heating.

Why I Like the Cosy Heat Pump Hub and Pods.

✔ Set schedules for heat and hot water – all controlled through the app.
✔ Monitor room temperatures remotely – handy when you’re out.
✔ Boost heating in specific areas – great for quick adjustments without opening the app.
✔ Energy-efficient hot water boosts – uses around half the electricity of an immersion heater.
✔ Future-proof tech – I expect Octopus will add more integrations over time.

If my mum was visiting and wanted the lounge warmer while I was out, she could just tap the pod in that room. My kids? They’d have to wait for me to come home! 😂

For the real tech geeks, Cosy Heat Pump doesn’t yet integrate with Home Assistant, but I suspect Octopus has the data to enable this in the future.

Overall, the Octopus Cosy 6 is a game-changer for heat pump owners. It’s not just a smart thermostat it’s a fully integrated system designed to cut costs. It also saves energy, and gives you more control over your heating making it better for your pocket and the planet too!

Octopus Cosy Hot Water Tank: Hot Water, Less Waste, No Drama

The Octopus Cosy hot water tank is built to keep your home supplied with reliable, energy-efficient hot water, working seamlessly with the Cosy 6 heat pump. Unlike a traditional boiler-fed system, this tank is designed to store and maintain hot water at the perfect temperature, ensuring you always have a steady supply when you need it. It’s well-insulated to minimise heat loss, meaning less wasted energy and lower bills. This might mean it takes up slightly more room than your current hot water tank (if you already have one) but Octopus will run through all of the options in your home survey.

Whether you’re running a morning shower rush or filling up a deep bath after a long day, the Cosy Tank should deliver without the wait or waste. However, if you need to get that hot water topped up in a hurry you can always hit the boost button on your Cosy Pod or in the Octopus app. (Make sure you ask the engineer doing your install to make one of the pods a hot water boost button.)

Just remember you can always use the boost button too if Octopus has a free electricty session! Get that hot water all topped up on super green electrons.

How fast does the Cosy Heat Pump heat hot water?

I have three teenage daughters so the issue of hot water was quite high in my research. The Cosy 6 high-temperature heat pump heats water surprisingly fast usually within an hour avoiding drama. You can schedule overnight ready for the morning as an example, but I would suggest allowing a two-hour window just in case. Once the water reaches the set temperature, the system automatically switches back to heating, so you can run both at the same time.

Just so you are aware the hot water takes priority, but as soon as that is up to temperature, control is handed back to heating, ensuring your home stays warm without interruption.

Heat Pump vs. Gas Boiler: Like Sailing vs. Rowing (with a Motor as a Bonus!)

Think of heating your home like moving a boat across a lake:

🚣 A Gas Boiler is Like Rowing – You’re generating all the power yourself, using fuel (gas) and effort (burning energy) to move forward. It works, but it uses a lot of energy.

⛵ A Heat Pump is Like Sailing – Instead of creating all the power yourself, you harness energy from the wind (the outside air) and let nature do most of the work. You still need some input (electricity), but it’s far more efficient than rowing.

⚡ A Heat Pump on an Off-Peak Tariff? That’s Like Adding a Motor to Your Sailboat – You still use the wind (air-source heat), but when conditions are right (off-peak electricity), you can boost efficiency even more and get where you’re going comfortably with minimal effort and cost.

A gas boiler burns fuel to create heat, so for every 1 unit of gas, you get 0.9 units of heat.

A heat pump moves heat from the air into your home instead, giving you 3 to 4 units of heat per 1 unit of electricity just like a sailboat harnessing wind to move with way less energy than rowing! 🌬️⛵🔥

What is COP? Understanding Heat Pump Efficiency

COP (Coefficient of Performance) is just a technical way of saying how efficiently your heat pump turns electricity into heat. It’s a snapshot, not a fixed number and it changes daily depending on things like outside temperature and how hot you set your water or heating. Your COP is a combination of your heating and your hot water temperature.

Why Does COP Matter?

Like our sailing vs. rowing example, COP shows how many units of heat you are getting for a unit of electricity. The more units of heat you get, the cheaper your bills.

COP in Everyday Terms – Should You Worry About It?

You’ll find lots of YouTubers talking about their COP rate. If that interests you, great! But most people just need to know that:

✔ Your Octopus app tracks your COP for you.
✔ It’s not something you need to constantly check
✔ Lowering your hot water temp (e.g., 40°C instead of 55°C) improves efficiency (Not always the best idea though)

But let’s keep it real,  you still need water hot enough for a decent shower, so you can save money lowering the temperature but will you enjoy the experience?  I have three daughters and sometimes I need to escape for a hot bath too from time to time!!

If you want to save money I would spend time researching the right Octopus tariff to go with your new heat pump! You could look at the Octopus Cosy or Agile tariffs. If you also have an EV look at Octopus Go and Intelligent Octopus Go.

Octopus Cosy Heat Pump Referral Code

The Cosy 6 and Cosy 9, COP & Cost – A Quick Example

Let’s talk numbers and tariff prices very quickly I’ll keep it simple.

How Much Does a Heat Pump Cost to Run?

Octopus Cosy 6 heat pump what does COP mean?

If you use 1 kWh of electricity at 25p and your heat pump has a COP of 3, that means it produces 3 units of heat.

  • That works out to 8.3p per unit of heat.

Now compare that to gas:

  • 1 kWh of gas costs around 6.5p, but gas boilers are only 90% efficient.
  • That means you get less than 1 unit of heat per kWh, making the actual cost 7.2p per unit of heat.

At first glance, gas looks cheaper. But here’s the game-changer, Octopus offers off-peak electricity tariffs for heat pumps and a variety of other smart tariffs that might suit your needs. Gas users are limited to the traditional gas tariff or Octopus Tracker, which changes daily. Right now the Octopus Tracker tariff is often higher than the standard Octopus flexible rate so it’s not much of an option to lower your costs greatly.

Why Heat Pumps on an Octopus Smart Tariff Can Beat Gas

Octopus Cosy 6 - How to monitor usage in Octopus App
Octopus App – Monitoring your Cosy 6 for you.

With the Cosy Octopus Off-Peak tariff, you can get electricity for around 12.5p per kWh for 8 hours a day.

  • That drops your heating cost to 4.2p per unit of heat—cheaper than gas.
  • Plus, with a COP of 3 – 4, you could get even better savings!

So What Does This Mean for You?

Honestly? Don’t overthink it. I didn’t want to add this section in just in case it sounded complicated but your Octopus app tracks everything for you. Over time, you might tweak your settings to find the perfect balance of efficiency and comfort, but you don’t need to be a heating expert! I most definitely am not. I hope I have made it less scary to understand.

Octopus monitors your system remotely, so if anything goes wrong they can help. Your Octopus installer will also set everything up and show you how the app works too. Plus if you get stuck they have support too.

If you’re the kind of person who loves digging into data, you can get nerdy about your COP and try different settings. But if you’re like me with three daughters who love long, hot showers your COP might take a hit from time to time! 😆

Luckily, heat pumps automatically handle things like legionella cycles, so there’s nothing to stress about. I hope this information is useful to know if you ever see COP mentioned!

Final Thought on Cosy Heat Pumps and COP:

With the right tariff, a heat pump can be cheaper than gas. On the standard variable tariff personally from what I have read because the standing charge is so high for electricty there won’t be a lot of savings. From talking to people on X and from the example below given by Octopus it works out about the same as gas BUT you can and should opt for an Octopus smart tariff with a good off-peak rate which will slash those bills. You can’t get that with gas and that’s where you can not only be greener but reduce your bill too!!

The SCOP on the Octopus Cosy 6 is 3.4 at 50C. If you want to look into the Cosy 6 performance I would search for SCOP rates.

SCOP is a more realistic picture of a heat pump’s performance compared to COP. It stands for Seasonal Coefficient of Performance and as the name suggests gives you the COP rate average for a season eg winter.  Weather conditions throughout the season and usage at home so looking at SCOP makes more sense if you are delivering a little deeper doing more research. If you are not at least you’ll know what it means and will sound zippy lol.

I am super geeky about Octopus tariffs so don’t be scared to reach out for help on social media. There are lots of heat geeks on X too who are always happy to give a second opinion on other Octopus customers’ tariffs and bills.

Octopus Cosy 6 is a game changer

Octopus Cosy Tariff – How It Saves You Money

The Octopus Cosy Tariff is designed specifically for heat pump users, helping you maximize savings by shifting your energy use to off-peak times. Here’s how it works:

  • ✅ Up to 20% cheaper electricity vs standard tariffs
  • ✅ Three off-peak price windows for better savings
  • ✅ Even bigger savings for homes with battery storage

Just remember you are not locked into using Octopus Energy for your energy supply. Octopus has some great tariffs but you don’t need to be an Octopus Energy customer to get an Octopus Cosy heat pump installed, and even if you are you can switch providers at any time. You are not locked into Octopus tariff and you still get access to the Octopus app regardless if they supply your electricty or not.

Real-World Cost Comparison – Is the Octopus Cosy Heat Pump Cheaper?

Octopus Cosy 6 Review 2025
Kraken Powered Smart Tariffs Can Help! – My visit to Kraken HQ, December 2024

When it comes to gas, you pay the same unit price 24/7 and even if you opt for the only smart tariff for gas, the tracker tariff it’s very high at the moment! But with electricity, Octopus Energy offers a variety of smart tariffs that reward you for using energy when demand is low. These tariffs are ideal for various smart devices like heat pumps, EVs, and battery storage, or just helping you cut costs and go greener by using cheaper greener energy when it’s available on the grid

The Octopus Cosy heat pumps are easy to control and can be cheaper to run than gas, but your savings depend on your home, energy habits, and chosen tariff. Octopus Energy’s analysis shows:

✅ Average savings of 20% on electricity bills compared to the Flexible Octopus tariff.
✅ Most customers save between 7% and 27%, with battery users seeing the highest savings.
✅ New three off-peak windows on Cosy Octopus make it even more attractive – especially for those with battery storage.

Which Tariff is Right for You?

  • Cosy Octopus: Ideal for those with a heat pump. If you have battery storage you have the advantage that you can store energy in the off-peak window and continue to run your home off the reduced rate even outside the Cosy price dips. The more battery storage the better!
  • Intelligent Octopus Go: Best for EV owners like Richard, who have an EV and a heat pump. He shared his experience on X:

“We’ve had our Octopus-installed heat pump for a year. We still use Intelligent Octopus Go because of our EV. Our heating is always on for efficiency, and we still saved £200!” – Richard Lewis, X, 7th Feb 2025.

A heat pump is cleaner and more efficient than a gas boiler. Yes, you’ll pay more per kWh for electricity than gas, but your heat pump produces way more heat per unit of energy and just like an air fryer uses less energy than a traditional oven but still cooks your food perfectly.

That’s why heating your hot water with the Cosy Heat Pump is about half the price of flicking on an immersion switch. Heat pumps are just that efficient, using a mix of air and electricity to keep your home warm for less. Plus now you can use smart tariffs to access cheaper electricty too!

Remember you can switch tariffs at any time so you could choose a tariff like Cosy for the winter and then change in the summer if that suits you better, for example, if you have solar panels you may choose Octopus Flux.  If you want to chat about your setup or ask questions join the conversation with me on X. I also have lots of information through this website which I update rather too frequently for my husband’s linking!!!

How much can you save with an Octopus Cosy 6 v gas?

Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps and the Octopus Flexible Tariff.

Charles who follows me on the social media platform X said he isn’t on the Octopus Cosy tariff but he’s still paying about the same as he did by using a gas boiler to heat his home so the Octopus results above ring true. A large chunk of the difference is in the standing charge between gas and electricty.

I have just had a heat pump installed, I am not on Cosy tariff. I am finding that the extra electricity I am using is about the same as the cost of the gas I used to use. However, the entire house is sitting at 20C and there are no hot and cold spots like before. Win for me – Charles on X, 8th February 2025.

Finding the right tariff for you may take some research even if it just takes a little time it’s worth it. The Cosy 6 is super efficient but in my view, you have to make sure you match it with the best Octopus tariff. It’s why I write this blog and chat so much on social media. I love the fact there are so many ways to save money with Octopus. You might find this blog post by Octopus Energy about savings you can make of interest. It’s a great post if you want to learn more about savings you could make with an Octopus Cosy 6 heat pump.

Return on Investment: Is a Heat Pump Worth It?

I get it that when spending money on new tech, we naturally ask about the payback period. However, funnily enough, we rarely do this for gas boilers, petrol cars, or even kitchen renovations!

The reality? If you’re replacing a working gas boiler, it may take years to see savings. But if you need a new heating system anyway, a heat pump is a no-brainer it’s more efficient, lower running costs, and is future-proofed for the next 15-25 years.

Government Grant – The £7,500 BUS grant brings the upfront cost as low as £500, making heat pumps as cheap (or cheaper) than a gas boiler.
Smart Tariffs Slash Running Costs – Pairing the Cosy 6 or Cosy 9 with an Octopus smart tariff can make it cheaper to run than gas.
Future-Proofing – Gas prices are unpredictable, while heat pumps are designed to work with an increasingly green energy grid, which is getting greener every year.

Honestly? Instead of asking about payback periods, I’d ask how much longer we’ll keep throwing money at gas boilers that will always cost to run. If you get the right tariff, you can make savings, especially with off-peak rates. Plus, there’s an extra £100 cashback with my referral link if you decide to go for it (Thank you if you do, just use my link rather than the code as the offer changed on 25th March 2025).

How the Cosy Heap Pump Optimizes Your Energy Use

Any Cosy heat pump integrates directly with your Octopus Energy app, automatically optimizing itself for maximum efficiency. With Octopus Energy’s smart technology, it’s likely we’ll soon see new smart tariffs that automate heat pump usage just like Octopus already does with EV charging.

Cheaper Electricity Could Make Green Tech Even More Attractive

If Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, succeeds in introducing regional pricing, electricity costs could drop significantly in some areas. Lower prices would make heat pumps, electric vehicles, and other green technologies even more cost-effective, accelerating the transition to cleaner energy.

Octopus is Revolutionising the Heat Pump Industry with their Cosy Heat Pumps.

Octopus is not just installing heat pumps they are transforming the industry. Their Cosy Heat Pump series and streamlined installation process make switching easier and more cost-effective than ever.

The Verdict: Are the Cosy Heat Pumps worth it?

Absolutely. The Octopus Cosy 6 is a game-changer. It’s finally affordable, practical, and hassle-free to get a heat pump. From just £500 upfront, UK homeowners can ditch gas, cut carbon, and lower their bills without the usual stress.

With the addition of the Octopus Cosy 9 Heat Pumps Octopus is filling the gap for a larger heat pump that matches the potential for savings as its smaller version the Octopus Cosy 6.

Octopus has simplified the whole process. Expert installation, a dedicated heat pump tariff, and UK-based support make Cosy Heat Pumps the most accessible heat pump on the market. Plus, they integrate seamlessly with the Octopus Energy app, giving you full control over your heating. If anything needs tweaking, Octopus can monitor and adjust it remotely that level of customer care is what sets them apart.

I’m excited to see how this system evolves. Once Octopus has more data from homes using the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9, I fully expect intelligent tariffs that optimize performance even further.

But What About Performance & Design?

Some homeowners who already own non-Cosy heat pumps have been sceptical about the design and performance of the Cosy Heat Pumps. But the thing is Octopus has packed this unit with features that set it apart from its affordable pricing to seamless integration with smart tariffs. If you want a hassle-free heat pump backed by a major energy provider, this is it.

Then there’s the added advantage of R290 refrigerant. That’s a win for the planet. It has a low Global Warming Potential (GWP), meaning it’s far more eco-friendly than traditional refrigerants used in some heat pumps.

Worried About Choosing the Cosy 6 or Cosy 9 Because It’s New? Don’t Be.

Octopus has a proven track record of shaking up the energy industry for the better. I recently attended an Octopus event on Project Mercury, a groundbreaking initiative to make green tech, like heat pumps, batteries, and EVs work together as seamlessly as we see with Bluetooth-enabled products.

Octopus is leading the charge on smart, green energy, and the Cosy 6 is just the start. If you’re looking for a modern, affordable, and future-proof heating system, this could well be the one for you!
