Octopus Cosy 6 and 9 Heat Pump Review: Cost, Savings & Is It Worth It?
Thinking About a Heat Pump? Discover the Octopus Cosy 6 and Its Big Sister, the Cosy 9
If you’re considering switching to a heat pump, the Octopus Cosy Heat Pump series is a game-changer. Designed and manufactured in the UK, it promises affordable, efficient and seamless integration with Octopus Energy smart tariffs.
As a long-time Octopus Energy customer, I’ve followed their journey closely. I was at the Energy Tech Summit in London in 2023 when CEO Greg Jackson unveiled the flagship Cosy 6 and announced ambitious plans to slash installation costs. His vision for innovation and affordability earned a standing ovation and for good reason.
With Octopus Energy making heat pumps more accessible than ever, they even offer a dedicated Octopus Cosy Tariff to keep running costs low. I’ve been an Octopus Energy customer for years, and when I saw the new heat pump, I knew I had to see if it lived up to the hype. This Octopus Cosy Heat Pump review will guide you through everything you need to know, helping you decide if it’s right for your home.

Octopus Energy’s Cosy 6 and Cosy 9: A UK-Made Heat Pump Revolution
I take my hat off to Octopus Energy. When they launched this in April 2022, they had the vision to slash the prices of heat pumps, making them more affordable and attractive for UK consumers. They’ve not only achieved that, but they’ve also secured jobs for many families while proving that the UK can lead the way in the green technology industry.
I grew up in the South Wales Valleys, a mining community where livelihoods depended on the coal industry. We relied on dirty jobs for our communities to survive, even though they brought illness and environmental destruction to our doorstep. That’s why I believe we need companies like Octopus Energy to be bold and innovate not just to create local jobs but to provide a genuinely affordable alternative for those who want to ditch fossil fuels and electrify their homes.
Greg Jackson the CEO of Octopus Energy is described as a disrupter in the energy market and he is showing his colours when it comes to heat pumps! They are now the largest heat pump installer in the UK.
If you want to take a look at the Octopus Cosy 6 a little more closely this video gives an overview of its capability and shows it being assembled on the production line in Northern Ireland. (It’s a very easy-to-understand video and made me want to clap at the end, but I am a geek!)
How much does an Octopus Energy heat pump cost?
An Octopus Energy heat pump costs as little as £500 for a standard installation, thanks to the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant. The total cost of installation is £8,000, with the grant covering 93.75% of the price. This grant is available until 2028. (It’s not based on your income.)
Rough Installation Cost | Price (After Grant) |
---|---|
Standard Home (under 6kW) – Cosy 6 | £500 – £1,000 |
Larger Home (6kW – 9kW) – Cosy 9 | £1500– £2,500 |
✅ Grant Applied: £7,500 from Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
✅ Extra Discount: £100 off with code 95460 (Can be used against any Octopus Heat Pump.)
I have regularly seen quotes of well below £1000 on X. It’s well worth getting a quote from Octopus but just take into account it uses your home’s energy-efficient rating to give a quick quote. It may go up or even down after the survey.
For larger or more complex homes, costs may be higher, but 91% of Octopus Energy heat pump quotes are below the UK national average of £5,565 but I have regularly seen lots of people delighted with the Cosy 6 installed for around the £1000 mark. So it is well worth getting a quote.
Additional costs may apply for extra work such as scaffolding, planning permission, or system upgrades. However, if you need to add some floor boarding say to your loft or a light for a hot water tank that is something you could do as a DIY project to keep costs down. Octopus will explain step-by-step what you’d need to do before the Cosy 6 is installed.
How Many Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps Are Available?
As of February 2025, there are currently two Octopus Cosy heat pump models available for installation in the UK:
- Octopus Cosy 6
- Octopus Cosy 9
Octopus has just launched the Cosy 9 in January 2025 and already rumblings are on forums reporting installations in February which is amazing. Not many people have seen the Cosy 9 so this is hot off the press! If you’re looking for an alternative to a gas boiler, this could be a game-changer for bigger households.
Octopus is expected to expand the Cosy Heat Pump series further and I will update this post when information is available.
What’s the Difference Between the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9?
The Octopus Cosy 9 is a slightly bigger model, first installed in January 2025. It shares the same base dimensions as the Cosy 6 but stands slightly taller.
Here’s a quick comparison:
Model | Suitable for | Heat Loss Capacity |
---|---|---|
Cosy 6 | Homes with 1-4 bedrooms | Up to 5.6kW |
Cosy 9 | Homes with 3-5 bedrooms | Up to 8.7kW |
Can I switch Cosy Heat Pump models after getting a quote?
Yes, after the home survey, your Octopus Heat Pump adviser can talk you through all your options and give an exact quote for your heat pump installation.
Are all the Cosy Heat Pumps Eligible for Government Grants?
Yes! Both the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 qualify for the government heat pump grant, making them more affordable for homeowners switching to low-carbon heating.
Plus, you can get £100 off using my Octopus heat pump referral link ( referral code: 95460 and just to be transparent, I also get £100, thank you if you use it!). Better yet, this discount can be combined with other promotions offered by Octopus!
A First-Hand Look at Octopus Energy’s Heat Pump Vision
I had the chance to visit Octopus Energy’s Slough warehouse back in 2022. At the time, their heat pump operation was still in its early stages. Octopus had just acquired the manufacturing company that would go on to produce the Cosy Heat Pump series, and I met some of the engineers from Northern Ireland who were at the site.
Speaking to them, their excitement was clear. They told me that as a small company, they were excited about the future for both job security and innovation. With Octopus stepping in and investing, they saw a huge opportunity to scale up and bring affordable, high-quality heat pumps to UK homes.
Fast forward three years and the Cosy heat pumps have now been designed, built, and are being installed across the UK showing Octopus Energy’s vision was spot on. This is a massive win for homeowners looking for efficient and affordable low-carbon heating solutions.
Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps – UK Made for Lower Costs and Future Proof Pricing
Unlike other providers, Octopus Energy designs and builds the Cosy 6 in Northern Ireland. This is great for UK jobs and reduces CO₂ emissions from imports. But it also helps Octopus future-proof pricing.
With the government’s Heat Pump Grant ending in 2028, Octopus is focused on scaling up production to drive costs even lower. Owning their supply chain means they are not just taking advantage of grants today but making heat pumps more affordable in the long run.
What Makes Cosy Heat Pump Different?
By manufacturing the Cosy heat pumps, Octopus cuts out the middleman, which means lower costs and better quality control.
The Pac-Man shape Cosy Heat Pump is compact and rounded, unlike the long, boxy units most people picture. The smaller size makes installation easier and helps keep costs down.
Octopus isn’t just chasing lab efficiency numbers. They focus on real-world savings for customers. Older homes don’t operate under perfect test conditions, so what matters is actual performance, not just theoretical figures.
That’s why Octopus created the Cosy Tariff a special electricity tariff designed to keep running costs low for heat pump users. They don’t just sell you a heat pump they make sure it works affordably in the long run too.

✅ Octopus Handles the Paperwork for Your Heat Pump Application
One of the best things about getting a heat pump with Octopus? They take care of all the paperwork for you in typical Octopus style. It is all easy to understand and follow along with.
Once you’ve signed the final sales agreement, Octopus will send you an email confirming they’ve completed the ENA application and submitted it to your DNO. They’ll also handle the Government BUS grant application and the HEIS warranty application on your behalf.
After everything is processed on their end, they’ll advise you to keep an eye out for an email from Ofgem regarding your grant application. All you need to do is click the link and confirm your eligibility. It’s also worth checking for any messages from your DNO in case they need any further details. You just forward these to Octopus.
Should you need planning permission for your heat pump installation Octopus can help you with this they cannot submit the form on your behalf but your Octopus adviser will talk you through this early on.
Octopus say that; Most heat pumps can be fitted under something called “permitted development” which means that planning permission is not required.
At this point all you have paid is a £200 deposit, the rest is payable upon completion of your Cosy 6 installation. It’s that easy Octopus makes the whole process hassle-free! 💡
Q: Why do I need to pay a deposit before the survey?
- Octopus Energy requires a deposit as a commitment to show you’re serious about proceeding with the installation.
- This helps them allocate resources and plan your heat pump installation efficiently.
- The deposit is fully refundable, so if you decide not to go ahead, you’ll get your money back.
How Much Can You Save with a Heat Pump?
Savings vary, and Octopus is refreshingly honest about that. TJ Root, Director of Flexibility at Octopus, compares it to a car’s MPG rating. Your actual efficiency depends on how you use it, your home setup, and the weather. That’s why having Octopus Energy on hand with advice and a dedicated heat pump tariff makes sense. They can even remotely monitor your Cosy heat pump and diagnose any issues.
I delve further into the cost saving of the Cosy Heat Pumps towards the end of this blog post.
This is a great overview of the Octopus Cosy Heat Pumps.
Getting the Right Fit Matters with any Heat Pump, including the Cosy 6 and Cosy 9.
If your heat pump is too small, it won’t keep you warm. If it’s too big, you’ll waste energy and money. Think of it like picking the right sized speaker for a room too small and it struggles, too big and it’s overkill.
Heat pumps run at lower temperatures than gas boilers, so some homes need bigger radiators. Octopus takes care of this as part of the installation, making sure your system works efficiently from day one.
Octopus will help you decide which of the Octopus Cosy series best meets your home’s needs.
Carbon Footprint – The Eco-Friendly Choice
A heat pump is 3-4 times more efficient than a gas boiler. For every unit of electricity used, you get three to four units of heat. While electricity costs more per unit than gas, this high efficiency cancels that out, making it cheaper overall.
As more green energy sources enter the grid, running a heat pump gets even cheaper and greener. Unlike many imported models, the Cosy 6 is built in the UK, meaning lower transport emissions and a smaller carbon footprint right from the start.
How Long Does a Heat Pump Last?
With regular maintenance, a heat pump lasts 15 to 25 years which is longer than a gas boiler.
Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 – 8 Year Warranty & Aftercare.

Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 Smart Features & Future-Proof Design
The Cosy 6 is built to last and designed for modern homes:
- Uses eco-friendly R290 refrigerant
- Works in temperatures as low as -25°C
- Includes smart controls for easy remote management
This is what excites me the over-the-air software updates which means your heat pump improves over time, just like a smartphone.
🚀♻️🚨 Potential Downsides of the Octopus Cosy 6 and Cosy 9 🚨
❌ Learning Curve – Some users find heat pumps different from gas boilers.
❌ Space for the Hot Water Tank – If upgrading from a combi boiler, you’ll need a storage tank which will require more upheaval to install.
❌ Electricity Prices Can Vary – Tariffs change, so it’s worth reviewing your energy deal yearly.
