Should You Fix Your Energy Tariff Now Octopus Has Added Exit Fees?

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth fixing your energy tariff now that Octopus has introduced exit fees, you’re not alone and it’s a very fair question.

Up until recently, Octopus was known for offering fixed rates with no strings attached and with no exit fees or lock-ins. It gave customers the freedom to fix now and switch later if something better came along. In fact, I’ll hold my hands up: I’ve often encouraged people to play the field locking in a low fixed rate and bail out if prices dropped further. Octopus gave us the tools to do that, and many of us took advantage of it.

UPDATE: 10th April 2025 – This was a flash in the pan for 48 hours as Octopus offered a limited amount of fixed tariffs but it included an Octopus fee. This offer is no longer available and we are back to 10% off the April Price Cap with no exit fee again.

Octopus 12-month fixed with exit fees. Is it worth it?

As of 8th April 2025, Octopus has introduced a £50 exit fee per fuel type on its fixed tariffs. And honestly? I think it’s fair enough based on the almost 15% discount they are offering compared to the April 2025 Price Cap.

Is Octopus Energy worth switching to now there is an exit fee?

Here’s why:

  • Wholesale prices are dropping, but the market is still volatile.

  • Octopus is offering a 14.6% discount compared to the April 2025 price cap which could be a real lifeline for those struggling.

  • To provide that discount sustainably, they need to know customers won’t jump ship the minute another deal appears.

  • They are offering customer stability while they can but energy is cheaper right now. It could be a good haven but I suspect it’s going to be a limited offer so grab it if you want it!

Is fixing with Octopus still a good idea?

That depends on your situation. Let’s break it down:

Scenario Fixing with Octopus now might be…
You’re on the price cap or coming off a fix soon ✅ A smart move – you’ll save ~14.6% right away
You want predictable bills ready for winter. ✅ Good timing – lower usage plus a lower rate
You’re betting prices will fall further fast 🤔 Risky – but exit fees are still manageable if you want to switch later
You’re a serial switcher waiting for the next best deal ⚠️ Time to rethink the strategy – the game has changed. Maybe you’d like the Tracker Tariff?

I think what Octopus is saying here is: We’ll reward you for loyalty, but we need a little loyalty back in return. It’s been a great game beating the Price Cap jumping tariffs but I know lots watch my content and switch but then don’t continue to bounce between tariffs or track them regularly like I do. This offers quite a good bet as it’s a lot cheaper than even predicted price drops. If towards the end of the deal, you want to switch you will most likely have saved the £100 exit fee already especially if you took the £50 credit switching to Octopus.

And let’s not forget: this isn’t about locking you in forever. It’s about balancing the need for stability while still giving customers some of the lowest, most transparent rates available. You’ll make that saving now and lots of us need that stability with the way the world is going at the moment!

My Journey: From 20 Years with British Gas to Octopus Energy

For around two decades, I was a loyal British Gas customer. Like many others, I stuck with what I knew, assuming all energy companies were much the same. However, when I moved home in 2018, I began to realise other companies could offer more and I switched to Octopus Energy.

Yes, all these companies provide us with energy for our homes, but some think outside the box and make using energy something we should consider more. How are we treated as customers? What are their values? Will they demand more from us and fight for change not just for our pockets but for the planet? I was just another number in a massive, outdated system. British Gas, a corporate giant, seemed more interested in profits than people.

Then I discovered Octopus Energy, a challenger brand with a bold mission. I soon discovered it wasn’t just another energy company, it was a movement.

Fast forward to 2025, and Octopus has grown into the UK’s largest energy supplier, overtaking British Gas for the first time in history.

I now share my passion and geekiness on social media where I try and help other people to understand their energy bills and reduce their Octopus Energy bills.

In 2024 Octopus Energy gained one new customer every 30 seconds!
