Octopus this week has launched a competition to encourage its customers to reduce their energy consumption this winter. Lots of us are trying to cut back BUT if you sign up to the Octopus Winter Workout you have the chance to win a share of a staggering 1 million pounds which they are going to give away!!

How does it work?

Customers have to sign up for the Octopus Winter Workout before the 23.59 of the 5th December 2021.

You’ll be given some hints and tips on how to cut your gas use whilst also staying warm at home.  There will be a 12 week period where you have to try and reduce your gas consumption. This competition will start in early December 2021.

YOU DON’T NEED A SMART METER TO TAKE PART IN THE WINTER WORKOUT!

Prizes.

One customer a week will win a staggering £8,000 prize. This will be added as a credit on the winner’s Octopus account.

There will be a  grand prize draw worth £64,000 at the end of the program.

Every customer who takes part will be entered into a prize draw. It is great if you hit your energy reduction targets but you’ll still get an entry regardless of your results. Once you sign off a tip to say you have given it a try you will allocate an extra entry.

Plus: every customer who beats their winter target will win an equal share of the remaining £1000000 prize pool – that’s a massive £840,000 to go around!👏

OCTOPUS ENERGY API

Even though I haven’t got a tech background I know that the Octopus Energy API open source is quite something! Companies usually lock this information away.   Octopus, however, celebrates innovation even when it’s by someone else.  As a result, lots of great ideas have popped up.

What is the Octopus API key?

An application programming interface (API) key allows you access to specific data or functionality. The Octopus API allows its customers and business partner to use the API to automate functions such as;

• Browsing energy products, tariffs and their charges.
• Retrieving details about a UK electricity meter-point.
• Browsing the half-hourly consumption of electricity or gas meter.
• Determining the grid-supply-point (GSP) for a UK postcode.
• Creating a quote.
• Creating an account.

Why allowing access to the Octopus Energy API is a good idea?

Sharing the Octopus API  is a good idea because it opens up the floor to innovators.  If we want to decarbonise our energy systems we all have to work together.

Recently I have seen some really clever Octopus Energy Apps not created by Octopus. If we can automate our home to use energy in a smart way then it’s going to speed up our ability to achieve Netzero.

1. Log into your Octopus Energy Account.
2. Click on Account Settings.
3. Scroll down to Developer settings.
4. Click on API access.
